Beyond Our Galaxy : Exploring the Vastness of Space
The universe used to be such a simple place. It was basically us and all the things we could see or sense around us. But the philosopher Archytas of Tarentum (428-327 B.C.) proposed that the universe has no boundary. If it did, a spearman could always walk up to that boundary and throw a spear outward. The spear would have to land somewhere, and therefore, he argued, the universe must be infinite.
